One of the most exciting things you can do is to participate in an REU
(Research Experience for Undergraduates) program over the summer.
Start thinking about applying now! Here are the REU deadlines for this year.
For a change you get PAID to study.
This is most commonly done during the summer after your junior year,
but many sophomores also participate (and many attend an REU again after their
junior year). Freshman can also benefit from applying
and there is a long shot that you might get in.
Applications are usually due in January, and it is a good idea to get started lining
up letters of recommendation and making plans
in late November -- before final exams and Christmas break.
Please go to this year's REU FAQ to find out more. I will be updating those links over the next few months with news of REU's which will be offered during the summer 2001.
You can also get an idea of what is possible by reading the record of last year's summer 2000 REU sites
