| SUMS Talk and Officer Elections |
On Wednesday, April 10, we will have another SUMS talk, and also elect our officers for next year. If you would like to run for one of the positions of President, Secretary, Business Manager, Director of Events or Director of Publicity, or if you would like to nominate somebody else for one of these positions, please email Professor Johnson.
Elections will be held at 7:45 PM Wednesday, right before the talk. Here is the information about the talk itself.
Professor John Harper
University of Rochester
Title: Twisted Arithmetic
Abstract:
Mathematical theories often start with an attempt
to quantify natural phenomina. Homotopy theory is
but one example. The talk will present some experiments
which illustrate geometric facts about space which
motivate the subject. No prior mathematical knowledge
is required in order to perform the experiments. Many
involve twisting or turning objects in space. The
subject codifies the results in terms of numbers, hence
the title, "twisted arithmetic".
If you own scissors, you are encouraged to bring them!
Date: Wednesday, April 10, 2002.
Place: Math Lounge, a.k.a. Hylan 901
Time: 8:00PM
As always, there will be FREE PIZZA at 7:45. Come and eat while electing next year's officers!

| Go to a Math Conference! |
The Mathematical Association of America is having a conference at SUNY Brockport on April 19-20. Although we haven't yet heard exactly what the talks there will be about, we are expecting that there will be a lot that undergraduates will find interesting and understandable. Last semester, a few students went to the MAA conference at Brock University and had a great time.
We will post more details about talks that we think will be interesting as soon as we have them. In the meantime, if you think that you might like to go, please email Professor Johnson and let her know that you're interested.
