Changing your calculus sequence
Choosing a calculus sequence -- Which calculus course should you take?
Transfer Credit
- Equivalent courses from other colleges: Most colleges
offer the equivalent of the MTH
161
and MTH 141
sequences in mathematics, (they might be designated
"physics/engineering" and "life sciences"
sequences respectively). If the topics for the equivalent course,
as listed in their catalog, is substantially the same as the topics
for the sequences above and appears to be at a comparable level,
then the mathematics department will grant transfer credit for the
course.
- To obtain transfer credit: Bring a xerox copy of the
page(s) of the catalog containing the equivalent calculus course
which you took to the mathematics secretary at Hylan 910. They
will give you the required forms and set up an appointment with a
faculty member who will review your petition. You must then file
the forms with Academic Advising in Lattimore 315.
- To obtain prior approval for a summer calculus course which you plan to take, bring a xerox copy of the page(s) of the catalog containing the equivalent calculus course which you took to the mathematics secretary at Hylan 910. They will give you the required forms and set up an appointment with a faculty member who will review your petition. You must then file the forms with Academic Advising in Lattimore 315.

Changing your calculus sequence
- Changing sequences is very easy during the first weeks of the
course. In fact if you are unsure which level you wish to take,
sit in on more than one sequence for a lecture or two and then
decide. To change courses (or sections) you will need to obtain
a drop/add form from Academic Advising, have it signed by the
instructor of the course you wish to register for and then return
it to Academic Advising. It is polite to tell the instructor of
the sequence you are leaving of your intentions. Except for cases
where the classrooms are overcrowded, there will be no difficulty.
- Transferring sequences late in the semester, for example,
transferring from
MTH 161 to
MTH 141 or from
MTH 162 to
MTH 142 is possible,
by following the procedure above. Most instructors will not
allow you to transfer, unless you will be taking at least one
midterm as well as the final exam in the course you are joining.
- Taking MTH 161,
MTH 142,
MTH 143 as a
sequence is possible. It is also possible, in some cases to
transfer from the MTH
141
sequence to the MTH
161 sequence
even after a semester, if you obtain the instructor's permission.
- Transferring from the MTH 141 sequence or the MTH 161 sequence into the MTH 171Q sequence after the first semester would be unusual and would require the permission of the instructor of the MTH 171Q sequence.
