RECOMMENDATIONS FOR MATH MAJORS

The following general recommendations are for students who are concentrating or intending to concentrate in mathematics. Be sure to review your individual situation with your departmental advisor.

It is recommended, but not required, that students intending to concentrate in mathematics, especially students who wish to strengthen their ability to read, write, and understand mathematical proofs, consider taking MTH 200 before taking some of the more theoretical upper level courses such as MTH 236, MTH 240 or MTH 265. Students who have completed the mathematics honors sequence MTH 171-174 do not normally take MTH 200. Also MTH 235 should be taken early in the student's concentration program.

The following is a suggested sequence in which to take the core courses of the major. This is a natural sequence in which to take these courses. Further, and a major reason for suggesting this specific sequence, is the hope that most math majors (of the same year of graduation) will take these courses together and get to know each other well. This can be a major advantage for math majors. Hopefully it will foster a sense of belonging to a well defined group from which majors can draw help, strength, encouragement, advice, etc.

The recommended sequence is:

Spring of sophomore year:
MTH200 if applicable (see above recommendation)
Fall of Junior year:
MTH 235
Spring of Junior year:
MTH 236 or MTH 240
Fall of Senior year:
MTH 265
Students entering the major after completing the MTH 171-4 sequence (who do not normally take MTH 235) should take MTH 265 in the Fall of their Junior year and MTH 236 and/or MTH 240 in the Spring of their Junior year.
