An Overview of the 4 Math Majors
Each of the 4 Math Majors has its own advantages; see which one
appeals to you. We list some of the salient points of each degree. Click
on the links to see the full requirements. Advanced Math
courses are those numbered 200 or higher. Students who have completed
the two-year 170 sequence automatically receive credit for Math
235.
A two-year calculus sequence could be any of the following.
- Math 141, 142,
143, 164,
165
- Math 161, 162,
164, 165
- Math 171Q, 172Q,
173Q, 174Q
- Our most intensive degree.
- Requires the two-year 170Q sequence, or the sequence of
Math 161, 162,
164, 165,
235.
- Requires Math 236H,
240H, and 265H.
- Requires 2 graduate courses, and 2 other advanced Math courses.
- Students must complete an independent research project.
- Students must satisfy the
upper level writing requirement.
- Our most flexible major. Very suitable for double majors, or those who
would like to design their own program.
- Within the B.A. in Mathematics, the department has
tracks for those with interests
in Financial Mathematics, Teaching, Mathematical Biology, or Actuarial Science.
- Any two-year calculus sequence is permitted.
- Requires Math 235 and either
236 or 240.
- Requires one of Math 201,
255, 263,
265, 282, or
285.
- Requires 3 additional advanced math courses.
- Requires 2 additional courses with
advanced math content.
- Students must satisfy the
upper level writing requirement.
