4+1 Program in Teaching and Curriculum

for University of Rochester Undergraduates

To allow and encourage University of Rochester undergraduates to consider a career in teaching and to earn a master's degree (as required for permanent certification in New York State), the Warner School has arranged a special 4+1 pattern of enrollment. Students usually complete the standard Math BA using two education courses to satisfy the two additional advanced courses with substantial mathematical content requirement.

This provides undergraduates the opportunity to take courses toward teaching certification and an M.S. degree while still in their senior year. The Warner School courses taken by undergraduates must be at the graduate level for them to count toward the master's degree, and the graduate credits earned must exceed the number of credits required for the undergraduate degree.

If you are an undergraduate, you may apply for early admission into a master's program in the fall of your senior year, however, you may not matriculate into the program until you graduate with the bachelor's degree.

It is possible to complete this program in a variety of ways depending on whether your schedule allows one semester, two semesters, or no semesters of student teaching during your senior year.
