Description
Early 20th century mathematicians tried to develop rigorous theories for integrating all possible functions. They found that any such theory would lead to contradictions. Their solution was to restrict the class of integrable functions. The resulting theory, due to Lebesgue (see picture on the right), forms the basis for modern analysis, including most of the mathematics used in science, engineering, and the social sciences.Prerequisite
