Course home page for this semester
- Cross Listed:
- Offered:
- Fall (odd years)
- Prerequisites:
- MTH164 and MTH235, or MTH174
- This course is a prerequisite or co-requisite for:
- MTH256
- Description:
-
This course builds on MTH164 to describe calculus on curves, and
surfaces. It provides useful tools for theoretical physics (in
particular relativity theory) and the theory of hydrodynamics. It is
also a useful basis for computer graphics. How can you show that NO flat
map of the earth can EVER preserve all distances? Take this course...
ask about Gauss curvature.
- Topics covered:
-
Torsion, curvature, the differential geometry of curves and surfaces
in 3-space.

MTH256. This is the mathematics used for general relativity and
for computer graphics. It is also used in fluid mechanics.
