Description:
This course is an introduction to the language and problems of mathematics. The precise topics vary from year to year, but the emphasis is always on increasing the student's "mathematical sophistication." It is essential preparation for all of the upper level mathematics and computer science courses. All majors in mathematics and mathematics/computer science must take this course and MTH235 before declaring the major or during the first semester in which the major is declared. Students taking the MTH171-174 sequence will usually not take this course.
Topics covered:
Introduces some of the basic techniques and methods of proof used in mathematics and computer science. Methods of logical reasoning, mathematical induction, relations, functions, and more. These methods are discussed in the context of specific mathematical problems and theories.
