Math 162 instructions for
new and prospective students

Things you need to do immediately

As of now (September 2, 2009) there are still a small number of openings in each section of Math 162. If you want to take the course you should

  • Bring a drop/add form (available in Lattimore 312) to the next meeting of the class and ask the instructor to sign it. Class meeting times and places can be found on the course home page.

  • Email the instructor (addresses are on the course home page) with your email address and ID number so he can create a webwork account for you.

  • After you have a webwork account, login to the webwork page using your emailname/ID number as username/password. There is a homework assignement due each Friday morning at 6am, and homework will count for 20 percent of your grade.

  • Consult the supplementary homework page for additional homoework problems that will give you extar practice at mastering the material.

  • Go to the recitations page and choose a time that is convenient for you. Go to the next meeting of that recitation and tell the TA who you are. There will be a quiz each week covering hoework that was due the previous week. Your quiz scores will count for ten percent of your grade.

  • Consult the course outline page for more information about the course and a full description of the grading policy.

  • Look at the syllabus page for information about reading assignments and exam dates. It also has information about the textbook. You may use either the 5th or 6th edition of Stewart.

  • Look at the extra credit page for information about extra credit problems that can improve your grade on thenext exam.

  • Come to class, pay attention and work hard. Do not think for one minute that if you aced calculus in high school, it will be easy to get a good calculus grade at UR.
