Extra Credit Problems for Math 162, Fall 2009

Throughout the semester we will offer extra credit for the solution of some challenging problems. They will be harder than the ones you see on homework or on exams.

How to get extra credit. You must convince your instructor that you have solved the problem prior to the deadline. Solutions will be posted here after the deadline.

How to submit your solution to an extra credit problem. Soluions can be submitted in person or by email to John or Doug, or you can leave it in one of our mailboxes in Hylan 913.

How much is the extra credit worth? If N students solve a problem, they each get 1/(N+1) added to their letter grade on the next midterm exam. Comparable extra credit on the final will be given for problems due after November 12.

Nobody may receive more than two full points of extra credit over the course of the semester.

  1. In problem #16 on page 413 (page 435 in the 5th edition), replace the square by a regular hexagon with side 2, and compute the area of the region consisting of points that are closer to the center than to the sides of the hexagon. Your solution must include a precise explicit description of the boundary of the region.
