Arf-Kervaire invariant problem solved

Prof. Doug Ravenel and coauthors Michael Hopkins of Harvard and Michael Hill of the University of Virginia have solved a long-standing problem in algebraic topology. The solution to the so-called Arf-Kervaire invariant problem was announced at conferences in Edinburgh, UK, on April 21 and in Lisbon, Portugal, on May 5. More about this breakthrough can be found from Doug Ravenel , the AMS news archive , and from an article at Nature News .
