Ghrist kicks off Wing Lecture Series
On October 21 - 23, 2009,
Robert Ghrist
kicked off the Department of Mathematics Milton Wing Lecture Series.
Wing (UR class of '44) was a math major who was recruited into the Manhattan
Project when he graduated. He made a generous bequest to fund the lecture
series. Ghrist, a prominent applied mathematician from University of
Pennsylvania, inaugurated the series in brilliant style. He spoke about the
applications of algebraic topology to sensor networks and many other applied
problems. Ghrist strongly believes that all significant mathematics will
eventually have practical applications, and he certainly presented a
fascinating collection of such applications.
