New Chairman: Steve Gonek
After guiding the department for 9 years, through good times and bad,
and through the tumultous Renaissance Plan,
Doug Ravenel
is stepping down as chairman. He plans to recuperate with a
sabbatical year at Harvard. Starting July 1, 2005,
Steve Gonek
will assume the chairmanship. Gonek joined the department in 1980 and
rose from assistant to full professor. Besides his well regarded research
in number theory, Gonek has worked hard to develop
the undergraduate program, and has received the Goergen award for
undergraduate teaching. The department was unanimous in wishing him
well in his demanding and often frustrating new role.
