One of the most fascinating recent ideas in math has been the use of random
matrices to gain information about prime numbers, via the study of the
Riemann zeta function. Both
Steve Gonek and
Dimitri Gioev have interests in different
parts of this program. Gonek, along with David Farmer and Chris Hughes, are
organizing a
summer school
on this topic here at UR, from May 30, 2006 to June 3, 2006. Afterwards,
from June 5, 2006 to June 8, 2006 there will be a
conference here
on Advances in Number Theory and Random Matrix Theory.
These events should provide everyone with an opportunity to learn some
fascinating new mathematics.
