Colloquium Series

The department has revamped its colloquium series to bring a series of distinguished mathematicians to UR. The first speaker, Percy Deift of the Courant Instiute, spoke on Universality for Mathematical and Physical Systems. The talk was enjoyed by a large group of physicists and members of other departments, as well as the usual math crowd. Deift discussed how large scale properties of physical and mathematical systems are often independent of the small-scale properties of the system. One very useful model along these lines involves random matrices, which have applications to such disparate fields as neutron scattering and prime number theory.

Everyone is eagerly looking forward to future talks of an equally high caliber. Here is the list of past and upcoming talks.
